What is Somers Listening To?

By Sienna DeMarinis, President

Music is something that nearly every teenager is obsessed with. Whether it be pop, rap, alternative, rock, or even musical theater, most people listen to something. I conducted a small survey in the school randomly stopping students and asking about their music preferences. I stopped 15 students from each grade and here were the results of the study:

 Pop Rap Country Alternative
9th grade
10th grade
11th grade
12th grade

This data suggests that pop music and rap music are the most popular throughout all of the grades. Obviously, this is a very small sample size, which could lead to some under coverage bias, but in general, the trend suggests that these two groups will be most popular. Furthermore, I then asked some of the students to name some of their favorite artists. The names that came up the most were Taylor Swift, Kendrick Lamar, Billie Eilish, Morgan Wallen, and Travis Scott. I cross referenced the top-100 global songs trending on Apple Music, and each one of these artists has songs in the list right now.

Kendrick Lamar’s new dis-track on Drake was a song that a lot of people mentioned as well, called “Not Like Us.” Currently, it is number two globally on Apple Music. Billie Eilish has recently dropped a new album called “Hit Me Hard and Soft,” which has numerous songs on the top-100 list.

Something that surprised me was the people I stopped for the survey (the first people who came into the library) were not fans of country music! This was suprising because I know so many people in Somers who are big fans of country music, including myself. There was recently a Morgan Wallen concert at MetLife stadium, and I knew at least eight people from SHS who were there—but this is more than all of the grades combined that I saw.

In conclusion, despite having a small sample size, the majority of the 60 students I interviewed were fans of pop and rap music.
